| Customer Reviews: Compact Unit - Poor Results April 9, 2010 Skeptical Buyer (Chicago) Seems to be an orphaned product. Formerly sold at MicroCenter, they were finally liquidated for as little as $50
In HD - 1440x720p mode, without zoom, the image is impressive, especially outdoors. however image is 4:3 not 16:9.
In D1 - 720x480p mode the image resembles a home recorded DVD in 6 or 8 hour mode, obvious compression artifacts.
The H 264 encoding uses AVI (most other units of this type seem to use MOV) perhaps a bonus to Windows users,
but a minus to Mac users.
There is no optical zoom, the digital zoom quickly makes the image quality very poor.
The "flash" is merely a single white LED, same as used for the video light.
"Image Stabilization" works but creates a playback image which resembles a reduced frame rate video (step motion)
Mono microphone on unit with no external input, poor pickup of a talking subject.
I'm very impressed by the image sensor, under room light conditions the picture is very good.
Don't confuse "Night Mode" with "Night Vision", there is no IR pickup but under dim light the image can be
acceptable provided strong background lights don't throw off the sensor.
Still picture mode limited by lack of optical zoom.
Quality nowhere near 5MB Still camera quality.
A neat little toy if you find it under $100 but don't be fooled by specs.
